Vasant Panchami honours Saraswati, goddess of learning, speech, music, and the arts, and is taken as the first day of spring. Fields turn yellow with mustard blossom and devotees dress in yellow to match.
Origin
Worship of Saraswati is as old as the Rig Veda, where she is praised both as a river and as Vagdevi, goddess of speech. The Puranic account says Brahma completed creation and found it mute and lifeless. He sprinkled water from his kamandalu, and from it Saraswati appeared bearing a veena, giving the cosmos sound, rhythm, and language. That day was Magha Shukla Panchami, remembered ever since as her day of appearing.
Why it is celebrated
The festival rests on the belief that knowledge is the highest wealth and should begin at an auspicious moment. Young children are given their vidyarambha or first lesson on this day, an elder holding their finger to write the first letter. Students, musicians, dancers, and writers place their instruments, books, and pens at the goddess’s feet for her blessing. Yellow stands for spring, for the sun, and for the light of the intellect.
The katha
One account tells that when Brahma brought Saraswati forth he was so struck by her that he grew restless, and turned to face her whichever way she moved — thus his four faces came to be. Saraswati reminded him that she was the very current of knowledge and not an object of desire, and Brahma then accepted her as his shakti and his teacher. The story carries a lesson: knowledge is approached through restraint and reverence, never through grasping.

Vasant Panchami is also linked to Kamadeva and Rati, for love and beauty are said to stir in nature on this day, and a Madana festival is kept in many places. In Braj it opens the forty-day run-up to Holi, when gulal is first thrown in the temples. In Bengal, Odisha, and Assam it is Saraswati Puja, with images of the goddess installed in pandals and immersed the next day. In Punjab and Haryana it is tied to the coming of spring and to kites.
